What Do I Need to Make Hamburger Hashbrown Casserole?

A bag of shredded hashbrowns, a bowl of browned ground beef, a bowl of shredded cheddar cheese, pepper, garlic powder, a can of cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup mix, and sour cream.
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 (30 oz) package frozen hashbrowns (shredded)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup of sour cream
  • ¾ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Step by Step Instructions:

Browned ground beef is stirred by a wooden spoon in a skillet.
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a skillet, brown the ground beef, drain off the fat, and return the meat to the skillet. Add the packet of dry onion soup mix, and stir in 1/2 cup of water.

Hash browns, cheese, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, pepper, and garlic powder are combined with a wooden spoon in a white mixing bowl.

2. In a large mixing bowl, add the hashbrowns, 1 cup of shredded cheddar, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, pepper and garlic powder. Stir this well to make sure it’s all combined.

A layer of the potato mix is spread evenly in a 9x13 casserole dish.

3. Add a little more than half of the potato mixture to a 9×13 casserole dish. You’ll want to make sure the bottom of the pan is completely covered, but still have some potatoes left to put on top.

A layer of the ground beef filling is added on top.

4. Next, add all the ground beef.

Spoonfuls of the remaining potato mixture have been added on top of the ground beef.

5. Then, evenly drop the remaining potatoes by the spoonful over the ground beef. Cover the pan with foil and bake for 45- 50 minutes.

The remaining shredded cheddar cheese is added to the dish after it has baked.

6. When the timer goes off, remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the casserole. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.

This simple standard is a great way to step up your casserole game and add a bit of new flare to your favorite classic! Serve warm with a side of steamed veggies for the ultimate comfort experience.

This recipe was outstanding. I substituted ground turkey for the hamburger and used the beefy dry onion soup mix.

Can this be adapted to a 6qt crockpot? Do you thaw the potatoes first?

I'm sure that it could be, but I've never done it personally so my suggestions are just that, suggestions. I think it would be fine to start with frozen hashbrowns and I think it would probably take around 3-4 hours on low. I hope that this is helpful and that you are able to make this recipe work for you Nancy!
