French Onion Smothered Pork Chops

If you’re looking for an easy weeknight dinner that will feed your whole family, have I got a winner for you. French Onion Smothered Pork Chops are so easy to make with only 4 ingredients and are ready in under one hour.
We like to eat these creamy baked pork chops with mashed potatoes and green beans for a simple weeknight meal.

This might sound weird, but people that I know give me food, specifically random ingredients, all the time. Like, I bought the wrong brand of such and such and thought you could maybe use it. Or I accidentally bought too much of this, would you like it? Etc.
That’s how I ended up with a carton of party sour cream dip and a container of French fried onions that needed to be used.. I already had a package of pork chops so I decided to throw them all together, with some shredded cheese for good measure.
The results were absolutely divine. You end up with tender pork chops in a creamy and cheesy sauce topped with bits of crunchy french fried onions on top. Now I never end up with leftovers when I make this!

Making these smothered pork chops couldn’t be any easier.
- Turn the oven to 350 degrees. Put your pork chops in a 9×13 pan.
- Spread a container of your favorite flavor sour cream based dip over the pork chops. I used Party dip, but French Onion, Toasted Onion, Ranch and Dill, Bacon and Cheddar all work well. Feel free to change it up and use what’s available. Alternately, you can use plain sour cream, just season your pork chops well with salt and pepper before spreading the sour cream over the pork chops.

- Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheddar over the dip and then finish them off with a small can of French fried onions.

- Put it in the oven and let it bake for about 35-45 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads at least 145 degrees. Or to your preferred level of doneness, I like my pork chops well done and always cook them to 160 degrees.
I always use an instant read thermometer to test my meat. They are inexpensive and are so handy in the kitchen when it comes to meat, checking your oil temperature when your frying, or even baking bread. I recommend this thermometer available on Amazon.

Wow these pork chops were delicious and moist.. My husband loved them and said put them on the make again list.. Which was saying allot as I’m not the best cook. Thank you for this great recipe
I had to reprint your recipe 3 times everyone loved them. Just printed it again so I can make them tonight. So good!
I made this tonight for a family birthday gathering and they all loved it….several went back for seconds…there was even enough leftovers that 4 of us are having for lunch ….
I plan to make this for my mom’s assisted living residents and was thinking of using boneless country style pork ribs cut into chunks instead of pork chops. Any ideas on this? And what would you suggest for side dishes? I am thinking mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables
Only thing I would like to point out for anyone making this, if you don’t already know, sour cream needs to be at room temperature before baking. It can only be left out of refrigerator no more than 2 hours before bacteria becomes a problem. Also be sure you don’t have the oven temp too high and don’t over cook the sour cream. Unfortunately sour cream curdles when its baked from cold to hot and at high temps or for too long. While it looks unpleasant, it still tastes virtually the same.
Can you use bone-in pork chops?
Sure Nichole! But you’ll probably need to adjust cook times a little bit. Bone in chops usually take a little longer to cook.
Made this for my family last night. LOVED it! It’s also so so quick and simple. With a 7mo old at home- simple, quick and delicious is all we are looking for in a dinner!
Glad your family enjoyed it Drew! My teenagers do too, so hopefully it’s a recipe you can enjoy for years to come.
So easy and so delicious!!
I fixed this and they were sooo good. I’m trying this using chicken thighs tomorrow.
Doesn’t the fried onions get to dark baking that whole time?
I made this tonight for the family. Used Onion dip mix and followed recipe except all I had was bone-in chops. Oh my goodness…DELISH! Easy and every bite was eaten. Served with long grain and wild rice. Thanks for such an easy go to meal! I will make again!
This recipe was absolutely delicious! I used regular sour cream. I seasoned the chops w/ smoked mustard seasoning, garlic powder, lawry’s, onion powder w/ a lil bit of ground pepper. It was flavorful and the sour cream, cheese topping and onions just melted in my mouth! My side dishes were green beans tossed in olive oil and texas smokehouse erasing and brown rice. This recipe is most definitely a keeper!
I made this for Supper on Monday and my husband and I both loved it!! They were quick & easy with some mashed potatoes and carrots & broccoli with cheese sauce. I will be making this again!
We really enjoyed the taste of the pork chops, but the sauce was curdled milk, didn’t look or really taste too appetizing. I’m not sure what I did wrong.
While cleaning out my kitchen cabinets last week I found a package of french fried onions. I`d bought them for green bean casserole for Christmas, but decided on green beans with bacon instead. Then today I had a couple of boneless pork loins I needed to use…..looking for an idea for them, I came across your recipe, I had all the ingredients, sour cream instead of dip, but mixed spices into it. I guessed on the amounts since I only had 2 pork loins, but cooked for 35 min. Easy to make make, simple ingredients, and yummy! This is a keeper!I will make for company because to too good not to share!
@Margaret S Groves, doesn’t the French fried onions get too dark putting them in for that long?
@Kelly, no they don`t get dark. i cover mine with foiland pull it off the few min. sorry it has taken a year to answer this.
