Tender, creamy, and cheesy, this old fashioned casserole is a great recipe to have up your sleeve for weeknight dinner side dishes! Every trip to the grocery store seems to get more and more expensive. Easy Scalloped Cabbage Casserole tastes great and is filled with inexpensive ingredients that will keep you on time and on budget. This old fashioned casserole recipe has been around since the days of the Great Depression, and works with any tight budget.

With the holidays just around the corner, it can be difficult to find a new dish that everyone will enjoy. This cheesy scalloped cabbage recipe is just what you need to bring something new to the family dinner table!

Cabbage can be a fabulous tool in the kitchen. Filled with vitamin C and other helpful antioxidants, it is a wealth of nutrition that is perfect for feeding a growing family. However, it is one of those ingredients that sometimes requires dressing up. By covering it in creamy cheese and topping it with crushed buttery crackers, it becomes a dish that even picky eaters enjoy.

Searching for another simple and healthy casserole dish? My family loves my Crock Pot Corn Casserole. But if you’re looking for another use for your leftover cabbage, my Apple Cabbage Slaw is a crisp, crunchy, and tangy side dish perfect for lunches and family get-togethers.

What Do I Need To Make This Recipe?

Six cups of chopped cabbage, shredded cheddar cheese, a can of cream of chicken soup, and a tub of sour cream.
  • 6 cups cabbage chopped into bite sized pieces
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 sleeve ritz crackers, crushed (bread crumbs work too, but these add a buttery flavor)

Step by Step Instructions:

The cabbage, shredded cheese, cream of chicken soup, and sour cream are added to the bowl and stirred together.
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9×9 casserole dish with nonstick spray.  In a large bowl, add the chopped cabbage, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, and shredded cheese. Stir it well until all the pieces of cabbage are generously coated. Season with salt and pepper, if desired, and spread in the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
Melted butter and a bag of ritz crackers are mixed together and spread over the top of the casserole.

2. In a smaller bowl, mix together the melted butter and cracker crumbs. Sprinkle the buttered cracker crumbs over the cabbage.

3. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling around the edges. If you prefer your cabbage to be more crisp, check it at 35 minutes. If you prefer a softer texture, it might need to cook for the full 45 minutes.
